The light is wrong. Too white. Too even. No shadows anywhere. Nora wakes in a medical pod wearing a hoodie that still smells like the group home. Laundry soap and old radiator heat. Beside her, Eli. Around them, machines humming in a language neither of them speaks. It's 2050. The world runs on LifeThread, a biometric system woven into every citizen's eyes at birth. It controls everything. Food access. Transit. Shelter. Employment. Identity itself. If the system can see you, you exist. If it can't, you don't. Nora and Eli don't have LifeThread. They were placed in cryogenic pods in 2026 by a corporation called Civitas as part of a trial that was never disclosed. Twelve children went in. Ten didn't survive. The two who did are now the only people alive who exist outside the system entirely. That makes them invisible. It also makes them the most valuable assets on Earth. Civitas wants them back. Not as people. As property. The legal framework that froze them classified them as research subjects, and research subjects have no standing in a biometric world. Two kids. No identity. No allies. And a city that can't see them being hunted by a company that never lost track of them at all.
